5 Signs Your Attic Ladder Is Unsafe and Needs Replacing
Most people don’t think about their attic ladder until something goes wrong. But a ladder that’s worn out, damaged, or the wrong size can give way while you’re on it. If your attic ladder came with the house, there’s a good chance it’s been there a long time.
Here are five signs it’s time to replace it.
1. It Wobbles, Shakes, or Feels Loose
An attic ladder should feel solid when you step on it. If it sways, shifts, or shakes as you climb, the hinges, bolts, or frame may be loose or worn. A wobbly ladder is one of the most common causes of falls.
2. Cracked, Split, or Broken Steps
Look closely at each step. Wooden ladders can crack, split, or weaken over time, especially with Florida’s heat and humidity in the attic. If any step bends, creaks loudly, or has a visible crack, don’t trust it with your weight.
3. Worn Hinges or Springs
The hinges and springs let the ladder fold and unfold smoothly. If the ladder slams down when you open it, is hard to close, or the hinges look rusted or bent, the parts holding it together are wearing out.
4. It Doesn’t Sit Right on the Floor
When the ladder is fully open, the feet should rest flat on the floor. If there’s a gap, or the ladder bends because it’s too long, it isn’t sized correctly for your ceiling. A ladder that’s the wrong length puts strain on the hinges and can buckle.
5. You’re Carrying Things Up a Ladder
Even a ladder in good shape isn’t safe if you’re using it to haul boxes and bins. Ladders are made for access, not for carrying items. If you store things in your attic, true attic stairs or an attic lift are a much safer choice. Read more in Attic Ladder vs. Attic Stairs.
What to Do Next
If you noticed any of these signs, stop using the ladder until it’s checked. If you use your attic for storage, we can also install attic stairs, an attic lift, or attic decking.
We’ll come to your home, measure your ceiling and attic opening, make sure the new ladder or stairs will fit, and give you an accurate estimate. Learn more about what affects the cost.
